MASTERED SCRAPPY COOKING?

Even if you’re a scrappy cooking expert, you’re still going to produce some food (or organic) waste. There are some things we just can’t eat. So where do you go from here?

Composting

Composting might sound like a new part-time job, but we promise it isn’t! It’s a great way to recycle your food scraps and generate healthy, nutrient-rich soil. You can either compost at home, or collect your scraps and send them to a commercial organics recycler (compost facility). Either way, you keep organic waste out of the landfill and put it to work building healthy soil.

If you choose to compost at home, here are two methods you can try:

Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting is composting using worms – you can use many different types, but our favorite are red wigglers. They can eat up to half of their body weight every day (imagine if we did that)! Worm composting is super easy and rewarding, as the worms produce castings that are the world’s best fertilizer. Plus worms make the world’s easiest pets. Interested?

Hot Composting

Hot composting is simply speeding up nature’s amazing decomposition process. It involves layering browns (carbon sources like dried leaves, wood chips, or hay) and greens (nitrogen sources like fruit and vegetable scraps and grass clippings). Add some soil to introduce microbes, water to keep it moist, and air (decomposition requires oxygen) and mix it all up. Let nature do its thing! Ready to get started?
